Fuel Cost Calculator: How Much Will Your Trip Cost in Gas?

How much will this trip cost in gas?

What This Does

Fuel cost is the most underestimated expense in road trip planning and the most ignored variable when comparing vehicles. This calculator gives you the exact fuel cost for any trip based on your vehicle's MPG and the current gas price β€” plus a cost-per-mile breakdown you can use for reimbursement calculations, business mileage tracking, or just deciding whether to drive or fly. Enter your trip distance (one way or round trip), your vehicle's combined MPG, and today's gas price per gallon. The calculator returns total fuel cost, cost per mile, and a fuel sensitivity table showing how cost changes with gas price swings of Β±$0.50/gallon β€” useful for planning a trip when gas prices are volatile. It also includes a vehicle comparison mode: enter a second vehicle's MPG to see the exact dollar savings over the trip and over 12,000 annual miles. If you're debating buying a more fuel-efficient car, the annual savings calculator shows the payback math. The IRS standard mileage rate for 2024 is $0.67/mile β€” but your actual cost per mile depends entirely on your vehicle and local gas prices. This calculator shows your real number so you can compare it to the IRS rate for reimbursement purposes.

When Should You Use This?
  • β†’Planning a road trip and want to budget total fuel cost
  • β†’Comparing the cost of driving vs. flying for a specific trip
  • β†’Calculating fuel reimbursement for business or personal mileage
  • β†’Comparing two vehicles for fuel efficiency on a specific route
  • β†’Estimating monthly fuel costs for your commute
Example Scenario

Sarah is planning a 680-mile round trip from Chicago to Cincinnati. Her 2021 Honda CR-V gets 30 MPG. Gas is $3.49/gallon. The calculator shows: 22.7 gallons needed, $79.18 total fuel cost, $0.116/mile. Her friend suggests taking his truck (18 MPG) β€” the calculator shows that costs $131.97, $52.79 more. At $3.99/gallon (if prices spike), Sarah's trip cost rises to $90.57. Round trip breakdown makes it clear: driving beats flying for this distance even at premium gas prices.

About This Calculator

This fuel cost calculator computes trip cost as (miles Γ· MPG) Γ— gas price, cost per mile as gas price Γ· MPG, annual cost as (annual miles Γ· MPG) Γ— gas price, and compares actual cost to the 2024 IRS standard mileage rate ($0.67/mile). Optional Vehicle 2 comparison computes savings per trip and per year. Annual fuel as % of gross income is the key affordability metric. Efficiency score (0–100) weights MPG vs US average (28 MPG), income impact, cost per mile, and gas price. All results update in real time across all nine inputs including the round-trip checkbox and MPG preset buttons.

The Trip tab renders a line chart of annual fuel cost across gas prices from $2.50 to $5.00/gal (11 data points) with a highlighted dot at your current price and a ReferenceLine at your current cost. When Vehicle 2 is entered, a grouped bar chart shows trip cost and annual cost for both vehicles side-by-side. The Annual tab renders a horizontal bar chart of annual cost for all 6 vehicle classes with your class highlighted, plus a vertical bar chart of annual savings vs your current vehicle (positive = saves money in emerald, negative = costs more in red). The Compare tab has a full comparison table with 5-year delta column and a gas price sensitivity table.

Dynamic accent: emerald (Efficient β‰₯75), indigo (Average β‰₯55), amber (Below Average β‰₯35), red (Costly). Four auto-trigger flags: income impact above 8%, MPG below 20, gas price above $4.50, and large IRS rate surplus. Six MPG preset buttons auto-populate Vehicle 1 MPG for common vehicle types. Four insights adapt to vehicle comparison presence, income impact, and MPG tier. Four What To Do Next steps cover three score tiers (efficient/average/costly). Vehicle presets adopt the accent colour when active.
