Temperature conversion works differently from all other units because it requires an offset formula — not just multiplication. Celsius to Fahrenheit is (°C × 9/5) + 32. A UK recipe calls for 250ml of milk, but your measuring cup only has cup markings. Enter 250 milliliters → cups: approximately 1.06 cups. The same recipe calls for 200g of flour. Why does temperature conversion work differently from length or weight?
Length, weight, and volume units all convert by a fixed ratio (1 km is always 1,000 m). Temperature scales have different zero points and different scale factors. Celsius and Kelvin share the same scale but different zeros (0°C = 273.15K). Fahrenheit has both a different zero and a different scale, requiring the two-step formula: (°C × 9/5) + 32. This means you can't convert temperature with simple multiplication.
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the amount of matter in an object (kilograms, pounds), while weight is the gravitational force on that mass (Newtons). In everyday usage, people use them interchangeably. This calculator treats pounds, ounces, kilograms, and grams as mass conversions, which is appropriate for virtually all practical purposes on Earth.
Are US fluid ounces the same as UK fluid ounces?
No — a US fluid ounce is 29.57 ml while a UK fluid ounce is 28.41 ml. A US gallon is 3.785 liters; a UK gallon is 4.546 liters. This calculator uses US measurements. When cooking from UK recipes, also note that UK tablespoons are 15 ml vs the US 14.79 ml.
How accurate is volume-to-weight conversion for cooking?
Volume and weight aren't interchangeable without knowing the ingredient's density. Liquids at room temperature are reliable by volume. Dry ingredients like flour vary significantly: 1 cup of sifted flour weighs about 113g, but 1 cup scooped directly can weigh 155g. For baking precision, converting to grams by weight is more accurate than volume.
What are the most common speed unit conversions?
The most used speed conversions are mph to km/h (multiply mph by 1.609) and knots to mph (1 knot = 1.151 mph). Meters per second to km/h: multiply by 3.6. For scientific use, m/s is the SI standard. For aviation and nautical navigation, knots (nautical miles per hour) are the standard unit.
