How Much Time Are You Selling for Your Salary?
What does your salary really cost you in life-hours?
Your salary is not a dollar amount β it is a number of hours of your finite life that you exchange for money. Most people know their hourly rate in the abstract, but they have never calculated their true hourly rate: what they actually receive in purchasing power for each real hour of life they commit to work. The difference between your nominal and true rate is larger than most people expect. A $75,000 salary looks like $36/hour at 40 hours per week. But add a 1-hour daily commute (both ways), 30 minutes of daily prep time, and a 28% effective tax rate, and the true rate drops to around $19/hour. Every purchase you make is actually purchased with hours of your life β and you may be paying more than you realize. This framework, popularized by Vicki Robin's Your Money or Your Life, transforms how you evaluate purchases and time allocation decisions. When a weekend hotel stay costs 13 hours of your life instead of $250, the decision looks different. When outsourcing house cleaning costs 3 hours instead of $60, the ROI is obvious.
- βYou want to know your real hourly rate after accounting for all work-related time and taxes
- βYou are evaluating whether outsourcing household tasks is economically rational at your income level
- βYou are thinking about a job change and want to compare true rates, not just salaries
- βYou want to reframe purchases in terms of hours of life rather than abstract dollar amounts
- βYou are negotiating remote work and want to quantify the value of eliminating your commute
Jordan earns $85,000/year. Scheduled hours: 45/week. Daily commute: 1 hour each way. Prep time: 30 min/day. Tax rate: 30%. Nominal rate: $36.32/hr. True rate: $20.14/hr. A $1,200 vacation costs Jordan 60 hours of life, not 33. House cleaning at $25/hr is below Jordan's true rate β worth outsourcing. Eliminating the commute through remote work would raise the true rate to $27/hr, equivalent to a $18,000 raise.
