Calculating the exact duration between two dates sounds simple but involves surprising complexity: months have different lengths, leap years add extra days, and the difference between "how many months" and "how many complete months" is meaningful. Whether you're calculating your exact age, how long until an event, how many days you've been at a job, or the gap between two historical events, a precise date calculator gives you the answer in multiple units simultaneously. Common use cases include: finding the exact number of days until a deadline or event (project delivery, vacation, exam), calculating your age in days or weeks for a milestone birthday, determining how long you've worked somewhere for a resume or benefits calculation, counting days between contract start and end dates, finding the date exactly N days from today, or converting a duration between years/months/days/hours/weeks. This calculator handles all these cases: duration between two dates, countdown to a future date, lookback from a past date, and forward/backward date projection from today. It correctly handles leap years, month-end edge cases, and provides the result broken down into years + months + days as well as the total in pure days, weeks, hours, and minutes.

Alex wants to know how long until their 10-year work anniversary. Start date: March 15, 2016. Anniversary date: March 15, 2026. The calculator shows: exactly 10 years, 3,652 days spanning 3 leap years, 521 weeks and 5 days, or 87,648 hours total. It also displays Alex's current tenure as of today: 8 years, 10 months, and 17 days — making the anniversary a specific, countable number of days away rather than an abstraction.
How does the calculator handle months with different lengths?
Month-based duration uses the calendar month, not a fixed 30-day approximation. January 31 to February 28 is 1 month (even though it's 28 days), while January 1 to February 1 is also 1 month (31 days). The 'years + months + days' breakdown counts complete calendar months and reports the remaining partial month in days. The total day count is always exact regardless of month length.
How are leap years handled?
Leap years (divisible by 4, except century years unless also divisible by 400) add an extra day to February. The exact day count between dates automatically accounts for all leap years in the range. For a one-year span, the number of days is 365 or 366 depending on whether a February 29 falls within the period.
What is the difference between calendar age and chronological age?
Calendar age is the number of completed years since birth (the number you say when asked your age). Chronological age is the precise duration: years + months + days. Someone born on March 15, 2000 is '24 years old' by calendar convention but is 24 years, 8 months, and 12 days old chronologically on November 27, 2024. Both are useful depending on context.
Can I calculate business days (excluding weekends)?
This calculator computes calendar days (including weekends and holidays). Business day calculations vary by jurisdiction (different countries have different holidays) and by company policy. For business day calculations, specialized tools accounting for regional holidays are more appropriate. As a rough guide: multiply calendar days by 5/7 to estimate business days (this overestimates slightly since it doesn't subtract holidays).
