BMI Calculator – Body Mass Index with Healthy Weight Range

Is your weight in a healthy range?

What This Does

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple ratio of weight to height that provides a quick screening signal for weight-related health risk. It's not a diagnostic tool, and it has real limitations β€” it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, and it can misclassify athletes and older adults. But for the general population, it's a reasonable starting point for understanding where your weight falls relative to health guidelines. This calculator gives you your BMI, the standard WHO category (Underweight, Normal, Overweight, Obese Classes I–III), your healthy weight range for your specific height, and how much you'd need to gain or lose to reach that range β€” in either imperial (lbs/ft) or metric (kg/cm) units. For context, the Centers for Disease Control considers BMI 18.5–24.9 the "normal" range for adults. BMI above 30 is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers β€” but absolute risk depends on many factors beyond BMI alone.

When Should You Use This?
  • β†’As a starting point for a health check-in β€” a quick benchmark before a doctor visit
  • β†’When tracking progress during a weight loss or fitness goal
  • β†’To understand what 'healthy weight' means for your specific height
  • β†’When comparing your weight to clinical guidelines
  • β†’As a conversation starter with a healthcare provider about weight and health risk
Example Scenario

Alex is 5'10" and weighs 210 lbs. The calculator shows a BMI of 30.1 β€” just into Obese Class I. The healthy weight range for 5'10" is 129–173 lbs. To reach the top of the normal range, Alex would need to lose about 37 lbs. This single number gives Alex a concrete target to discuss with a doctor, even though the path to get there involves many factors BMI doesn't capture.
