Age Calculator
Exactly how old are you?
Calculate your exact age β or the age between any two dates β down to years, months, and days. Also shows your age in total days, weeks, and hours, and counts down to your next birthday. Most people know their age in years. Fewer know that they're exactly 34 years, 7 months, and 12 days old β or that they've been alive for 12,670 days, which is 1,810 weeks, which is 304,080 hours. These numbers don't change anything about your life, but they have a way of making time feel more concrete. The calculator also works for any two dates, not just birth dates and today. Use it to find the exact duration between two events, calculate someone else's age as of a specific date, or figure out how many days until an anniversary or deadline. Change the "as of" date to see how old you'll be on any future date, or how old you were on a past one.

- βCalculating age as of a specific past or future date
- βFinding the exact duration between any two dates in days, weeks, or months
- βCounting down days to your next birthday
- βDetermining someone's age on a historical date β a grandparent's age at a specific event, for example
Tom is filling out a life insurance application that asks for age in years and months. He was born on August 22, 1983. The application date is March 5, 2026. He enters both dates: he's exactly 42 years, 6 months, and 11 days old β 15,537 total days. The application asks for age to the nearest month, so he enters 42 years and 6 months. His next birthday is 169 days away.

About the Age Calculator
This age calculator computes your exact age in years, months, days, hours, minutes, and even seconds elapsed since your date of birth. Unlike simple year subtraction, accurate age calculation must account for leap years, varying month lengths, and whether your birthday has occurred yet in the current calendar year.
The calculator uses the standard calendar-based method: it counts the full years elapsed, then the remaining full months, then the remaining days. For example, someone born on June 15, 1990 who is calculating their age on March 13, 2026 is 35 years, 8 months, and 27 days old β not simply 35.7 years. Each unit is calculated precisely before moving to the next smaller unit.
Beyond the basic age calculation, this tool provides rich context: your generation, zodiac sign, estimated physiological milestones (heartbeats, breaths), astronomical facts (Earth orbits, lunar cycles), and a full timeline of personal milestones from Sweet 16 to the Century Mark. The "Age As Of" field lets you calculate age on any past or future date β useful for legal documents, retirement planning, or historical curiosity.
How Age Is Calculated
The standard algorithm works in three passes. First, compute the difference in calendar years between birth year and target year. Second, adjust backward by one year if the target month/day falls before the birth month/day in that year (the birthday hasn't happened yet). Third, compute remaining months and days the same way. This produces the familiar "35 years, 8 months, 27 days" format. The total days figure uses a simple millisecond difference divided by 86,400,000 β this automatically handles leap years.
When You'd Need Exact Age
Precise age matters in several real-world contexts: legal eligibility (voting, drinking, driving, Medicare), insurance underwriting where premiums change on your birthday, age-group sports categories with strict cutoffs, pension and Social Security benefit calculations, and pediatric medical assessments where age in months or weeks (not just years) determines developmental milestones. The "As Of" date feature is particularly useful for these cases β for example, calculating whether a child was old enough on a specific enrollment deadline date.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is exact age different from just subtracting birth year from current year?
Simple year subtraction gives you one of two answers β it's either off by one year depending on whether your birthday has passed yet this year. Exact age calculation first checks whether the current month and day is before or after your birth month and day, then subtracts accordingly. For example, if today is March 13 and your birthday is June 15, the simple subtraction would say you're already another year older when you're not.
What is the 'Age As Of' field used for?
The 'Age As Of' date lets you calculate age on any date β past, present, or future. This is useful for determining someone's age on a specific legal date (like an enrollment deadline or retirement date), calculating how old a historical figure was at a given moment, or finding out exactly how old you'll be on a future date like a wedding, graduation, or milestone birthday.
How are heartbeats and breaths estimated?
The heartbeat estimate uses an average resting heart rate of 70 beats per minute, multiplied by total minutes lived since birth. The breath estimate uses an average breathing rate of 15 breaths per minute. These are approximations based on population averages β individual rates vary considerably based on health, fitness level, age, and activity. They're meant as perspective-giving fun facts, not medical measurements.
How is the zodiac sign determined?
Zodiac signs are determined by the position of the sun at the time of birth, which corresponds to calendar date ranges. This calculator uses the standard Western (tropical) zodiac date ranges β for example, Aries runs from approximately March 21 to April 19. Note that if you were born on a cusp date (within a day or two of a sign boundary), the exact sign depends on the year and your time of birth, which this simplified calculator does not account for.
What does the life percentage mean?
The life percentage shows how much of the US average life expectancy of 77 years you have lived. It is purely informational and based on a statistical average β not a prediction of your actual lifespan, which depends on many personal and genetic factors. The figure uses 77 years, which is the approximate current US life expectancy at birth according to CDC data. Someone aged 38.5 would show approximately 50%.
How do generations work and what are the birth year ranges?
Generational labels like 'Millennials' or 'Gen Z' are sociological categories defined by researchers and demographers, primarily based on shared formative cultural experiences. The ranges used here follow common academic definitions: Gen Alpha (2013βpresent), Gen Z (1997β2012), Millennials (1981β1996), Gen X (1965β1980), Baby Boomers (1946β1964), and the Silent Generation (1928β1945). These boundaries are approximate and some researchers use slightly different cutoffs.
