Running Pace Calculator

What pace do you need to hit your race goal?

What This Does

Running has three variables: pace, time, and distance. Know any two and you can calculate the third. That's exactly what this calculator does β€” and it's more useful than it sounds. If you're training for a race, knowing your goal pace lets you calculate your target finish time and plan your training splits. If you completed a run, knowing your time and distance tells you your actual pace so you can track improvement. If you have a time goal for a race, working backwards gives you the exact pace you need to hold for every mile or kilometer. The calculator also projects your finish time at your current pace for every standard race distance β€” 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon. This is useful for goal-setting: if you run a comfortable 5K at 8:30/mile and want to run a half marathon, you'll see a projected finish of around 1:54, which helps you decide whether to target under 2 hours or 1:45. Splits are calculated automatically so you know exactly what your watch should read at each mile or kilometer mark.

When Should You Use This?
  • β†’Training for a race β€” calculate the pace needed to hit a target finish time
  • β†’After a run β€” find your average pace from your total time and distance
  • β†’Setting a realistic race goal based on recent training paces
  • β†’Planning negative splits β€” calculate the pace difference between first and second half
  • β†’Converting between min/km and min/mile pacing systems
Example Scenario

Elena has been running 5Ks comfortably in about 28 minutes (9:01/mile pace). She wants to enter her first half marathon in 4 months. She enters 28:00 over 5K β€” the calculator projects her half marathon finish at 2:03, assuming she can sustain the same effort (aerobic efficiency improves with longer training). Her goal: get under 2:00. The calculator shows she needs to average 9:09/mile β€” actually slightly slower per mile than her 5K pace. She targets 9:00–9:15/mile in training.

About This Calculator

This pace calculator works in three modes: find your running pace from time and distance, calculate a projected finish time from pace and distance, or determine how far you can run in a given time at a given pace. Results update in real time as you type β€” no button click required. The runner score (0–100) reflects where your pace sits on the performance spectrum from beginner to elite.

Race projections are calculated by extrapolating your current pace across standard distances: 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon. Each projection is classified against amateur average benchmarks β€” giving context beyond a raw time number. The training zones tab derives personalized Zone 1–5 pace ranges from your threshold pace using standard percentage-based zone models used by running coaches worldwide.

The splits table shows cumulative time at each kilometer or mile marker, useful for printing and carrying in a race to ensure even pacing. Weekly mileage projections at your current distance help plan training load β€” with calorie estimates based on an average 70 kg runner burning approximately 1 kcal per kg per km.
