When Are You Most Fertile? Ovulation & Fertile Window Calculator

When are you most fertile?

What This Does

Understanding your fertile window is the foundation of both trying to conceive and natural family planning. Despite the common assumption that ovulation always happens on day 14, this is only true for women with a perfect 28-day cycle. For most women, ovulation timing varies β€” and predicting it accurately requires knowing your typical cycle length. Ovulation occurs approximately 14 days before your next expected period β€” not 14 days after your last period. This distinction is important: for a 35-day cycle, ovulation happens around day 21, not day 14. For a 24-day cycle, it happens around day 10. The luteal phase (ovulation to next period) is relatively consistent at 12–16 days; it's the follicular phase (period to ovulation) that varies between women and even between cycles. The fertile window spans the 5 days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself β€” 6 days total. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days, meaning intercourse in the days before ovulation can still result in fertilization. The egg survives only 12–24 hours after release, making the 2 days around ovulation the highest-probability window. This calculator estimates your next ovulation date, your fertile window, and your next expected period based on your last menstrual period date and average cycle length.

When Should You Use This?
  • β†’Trying to conceive and wanting to identify the highest-probability days for pregnancy
  • β†’Tracking your cycle for natural family planning or awareness
  • β†’Understanding why your fertile window shifts when your cycle length changes
  • β†’Predicting next period date from ovulation date
  • β†’Identifying patterns in irregular cycles
Example Scenario

Priya has a 32-day cycle. Her last period started March 1. Ovulation estimate: March 1 + (32 βˆ’ 14) = March 19. Fertile window: March 14 through March 19 β€” the 5 days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself. Peak fertility days are March 17 through 19. Next expected period: April 2. The calculator displays all 6 fertile window days highlighted on a calendar view, with ovulation day marked distinctly from the surrounding high-probability days.

About This Calculator

This ovulation calculator estimates your fertile window and ovulation date from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP), average cycle length, and luteal phase length using the standard clinical formula: Ovulation = LMP + (cycle length βˆ’ luteal phase). All results update in real time as you adjust any input. Three goal modes are supported: Trying to Conceive, Family Planning, and Track Cycle β€” each provides goal-specific guidance in the Insights tab.

The Overview tab includes a cycle fertility profile as an area chart showing fertility across all days of your cycle with your current position marked, plus individual fertile day cards showing the exact date, description, and per-cycle conception probability. The Probability tab provides a bar chart of all 7 fertile window days with per-cycle conception percentages from the Wilcox et al. (1995) study, colour-coded by fertility level (peak/high/low). The Cycles tab shows a bar chart of the next 3 ovulation dates and a full prediction table with all key dates.

Conception probabilities are sourced from Wilcox AJ et al. (1995), "Timing of sexual intercourse in relation to ovulation," New England Journal of Medicine 333:1517–1521, a study of 221 menstrual cycles. The calculator accounts for non-standard cycle lengths and luteal phase lengths with appropriate accuracy flags. Dynamic accent colours shift with cycle phase: rose (peak fertile), orange (approaching fertile), amber (fertile soon), purple (post-ovulation/luteal), indigo (follicular).
